To Lash or Not to Lash…

What works for you?

One question I get asked a lot is whether to get lash extensions for the wedding day and I have a some answers for you 🙂

Ok so firstly, let’s discuss the difference between lash extensions and faux lashes. Lash extensions are done by a lash professional and takes around 1.5-2 hours depending on the volume and style of lash. These typically last 2-4 weeks (although we all know what a 4 week lash looks like – it ain’t pretty) and you can get a “fill” within that time frame. I did them for over a year and really it was amazing. I felt like I didn’t have to wear any eye makeup and it saved me a lot of time and mascara. I also used the lash fill time to nap – so, it was like self-care of steroids… but it was also really expensive and added up – I think I was looking at an extra $200 a month just to keep my lashes on fleek, over the period of 2 years that’s almost 5k on a temporary beauty fix …NOT that there is anything wrong with that, but I’m a firm believer in allocating resources that bring joy and if lashes fall into that category then by all means, lash away girl. But it was a lot of extra time to find in my increasingly busy schedule and I would rather use that time to get a yoga class or work out if I had it (cuz you know, mental health = wealth).

Aaaanyways, this this just to say that the pros of lashes is that yes they are gorgeous and can really save time and achieve a bigger eye look without the extra makeup. Cush. Negative side being time, cost , and ooooohhhhhh shnap – I forgot to mention the after math… yeeeeah – so thing is, after you go for awhile in love and addicted to your long luscious lashes, you forget that actually you have little stumps for lashes that point straight out. It’s also undeniable that your lashes DO fall out and are noticeably thinner. However if you go to a really good lash artist I found that my real lashes still did ok in the process over time. I think it’s more the difference between having the lashes and not, and noticing them that makes them seem so little (but trust me, you feel like you have no lashes at all.)

So the big question remains – to lash or not to lash on the wedding day. As a makeup artist I will tell you right off the bat I can do a better job on a naked eye and add my own lashes. I can get your liner closer to the lash line, I can use shadows freely and not worry about the dusty residue that inevitably rests on the lash tops. I can shape and create an even more attractive lash using mink strips or my own individual lashes which look seamless and only take a few minutes to apply (they don’t last that long though/ just for the night 🙂

BUT the big caveat is this… maybe you will be having a whole week of festivities and you will want to have lashes that week to have for the rehearsal dinner and just feel fly that whole week. And maybe you want to go snorkeling and come out of the ocean looking like a mermaid. Or maybe you always have lash extensions and you aren’t going to take them off just because the makeup might look better.. so those are the two caveats…
