FASHIONISTA: EXPLAINED

As many of you know I’ve been writing the column ‘Beijing Fashionista’ for City Weekend Beijing for almost 2 years now. And I’ve met some of the most stylish and interesting boys and girls Beijing has to offer! Yes, I know, most of them are my friends, but can I help it if my friends are fabulous, fashionable, and fun? It also gets me thinking what is the term ‘Fashionista’. According to Urban Dictionary, a ‘Fashionista’ is described as:

+++

  • A person devoted to fashion clothing, particularily unique or high fashion.
  • A person not to be called a fashionista would be someone who obsessivly follows trends. REAL fashionistas do not believe in trends. (That type of person would be more correctly labeled a fashion whore)
+++
So there you go! A Fashionista is someone who believes in their own unique style, doesn’t necesarily follow trends, and someone who takes time in determining what to wear and how it reflects his/her lifestyle.
++++
Dear Future Fashionista- I know you are out there. Maybe in Beijing you are waiting in line at McDonalds at SanLiTun village, eating baozi on the street, attending a student fashion show- all dolled up with everywhere to go. Maybe you are in Thailand, foregoing the obnoxious stalls of KohSan road to find the real fashion pieces that withstand the wishy-washy trends.  Maybe you are in Maui, turning heads, and stopping traffic… Wherever you are- I aim to meet you and capture your fabulous style for the world to enjoy. Fashionistas of the world unite!
